Key Note Speech by Alvis Lazarus at International Simulation Conference at Le Meridian (Visit this link to know more about the speaker – www.alvislazarus.com)
Simulation is always been a much discussed topic and with competition becoming intense, there is no option to learn from mistakes and we have to be right the first time. Secondly, the cost of miss on key business decisions is so high and sometimes irreversible. This makes ‘SIMULATION’ a mandate before all the key business decisions.
I (Alvis Lazarus) have shared the content of my speech below with snapshot of my presentation and a brief of what I have talked with the audience in the conference.
In the context of Supply Chain, the usage of Simulation slowly spreads across from Manufacturing toward Logistics. All the Simulation tools like VSM, Layout Simulation, Material Flow Modelling, etc. which are previously used in only Manufacturing facilities are getting into warehouses and transportation hubs. Organisations try hard to run the warehouses as efficient as Manufacturing facilities. This is a Good Sign.
The Main reason being the operational efficiency in Manufacturing/Assembly is no more a competitive advantage, since all the organizations have started to follow these; and the only area which when tackled well will give the needed Competitive Advantage is ‘Logistics (Warehousing & Transportation)’. For Example, say in e-commerce Industry, the only function which is going to get you ‘Win or Lose’ is ‘Logistics’ and has a huge impact on Customer Experience.
Below slides explain few algorithms/models in Warehousing which are used in software as base protocol – SAP, Arena, Cplan, Promodel, Slot3D, SimPlan etc. The key take away is – Any simulation software you use, be sure to know what is going on inside, be sure what are the inputs, be sure on data integrity, be sure on the algorithm, be sure on the Output and be sure on how you are going to use this on Decision making …. By this, you exactly know what the Tool does. Failing to do this will get into a situation of ‘Garbage In & Garbage Out’.
